1792-1848. British naval officer and
novelist, popularly known as Captain Marryat
from his naval rank. He resigned from the
Royal Navy in 1830 after the success of his
first novel, Frank Mildmay. He wrote a number
of popular adventure stories, including Peter
Simple 1834, Mr Midshipman Easy 1836, and a
series of children's books, of which the best
known is Children of the New Forest 1847.
